The Three D's of Kicking A F***ing Habit: Quit Smoking

Trying to quite smoking or drinking can be kind of tough. I smoke; I have actually quit two times before, and started back up due to stress levels. (You can read about stress busters on this blog too. If not right now, then soon.) It's fucking hard. I know just as much as you do. Then there is drinking. You know, having a couple on the weekend is all right; however, when you begin drinking on a regular basis to cover up your issues, then something is definitely wrong. But let us assume that you are trying to quit smoking.

"What are the three D's, Heather?"

Well, the three D's are:
·      Decatastrophizing
·      Disputing Expectancies
·      Distracting

Decastrophizing
Cravings will seem fucking intense. They will be excruciating. Everything single thing will remind you of what you are trying to stop. For example, if you are trying to quit smoking, it will seem like every room smells like cigarettes. You will already be stressed to the max, so when people start being stupid you will want one to calm you down and to get a away for that few minutes. Remember that having a short fuse and going through withdraw are very normal. You can do this shit! It isn't like you are getting nails shoved in between your toes or bamboo under your fingernails. You can quite smoking if you want! (But not without a big ass fight with yourself, which I am not quite ready to do.)

Disputing Expectancies
Urges are positive expectations. Once we have a craving, we know that getting that thing we are craving will offer a feeling of pleasure in some manner. Urges are considered to be "myopic", which means that they can only see the advantages. You have to shed some light on the urges or cravings in order to control that bitch in order to quit smoking. One great way is to decrease the strength of your urge by focusing on the negative repercussions.

Ask Yourself:
·      How will I feel about it later if I give in?
·      What are the consequences?
·      Will the negative outweigh the good in the long run?

Distracting

Some of the urges are extremely relentless. You will need to distract yourself some way. What you decide to do depends on what you are interested in. If you are musician, write a song. If you are a writer, write outlines for your book. And the list goes on. Face it; you are in for a fight. However, it is one damn fight that is worth it in order to quit smoking. I plan on going through that fight very soon.
